I don't disagree, but a person has to find a balance. Are we on the face of this earth just to build an investment portfolio that will go to our kids or others so they can live high on the hog? For instance, I built a new house 13 years ago. I'm so glad I did, even though following your logic I should have bought land (I missed out on a 60 for $6,000 at the time), but even though that farm would have increased in value by most of what I paid for my house, I have no regrets. I love walking into this house every night after a hard day. Same with simple vacations to (for instance) bowl games. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and so many farmers I've seen over the years, including myself sometimes, are willing to give that up to build their fortune.
So true......have seen some people live poor to buy farm after farm......familys are riddled with divorce and substance abuse as a result. My kids will inherit a few acres, but I'm not farming till I'm dead to increase their holdings. I don't own boats, campers, lake houses or any fancy toys. I live in a nice reasonable home my wife and I built nearly 15 years ago that she loves and we have taken some nice simple trips with our kids. I will continue to buy land when it works financially or stick my neck out when its across the road but life and the ability to enjoy it is the most important thing there is. |
