Only reason for that beater is to get straw into chopper. May have helped get a very minimal amount of grain out of cereals but I guarantee if you don't run with the grate cover on in corn and maybe soybeans you will be replacing the upper sieve. It launches stubble onto the sieve and flattens a good sized area. Speak from experience.
