PROSPECT, TENNESSEE | Been there done that! I fully understand your reasoning! I still say properly managed cover crops in your area would work. I have several hundred acres of high clay soil, with CEC's of 30+, and have watched the OM come from 2.5-3 to 5 to 6% in the last 12 years. What once was what killed my APH, now holds it steady, or on a dry year will bump it!
It will take years, but tillage is a one-year fix, this cover crop thing is constantly "fixing" the soil. If I were you, I would seriously consider leaving some "test" strips out of tillage, incorporate some good covers and be patient, look at things in 5 years.
EDIT*** I suggested strips, that wont work..... Find you a side, separate field, etc. different management practices in this soil will require different planting times etc. A single species cover will take longer, use at least 5, treat it like a cash crop, and Im willing to bet you see results in 5 years. | |
