If you want old looking tin to go along with the old barn or corn crib boards and you don’t have any, you can “age” new tin in a matter of minutes.

I see in the pictures above some shiny new tin. That’s the same stuff we used on our kitchen bar.

Before I hung it, took a nail set and punched holes in it like you were nailing it on a roof. Then bought the cheapest toilet bowl cleaner and sprayed it on. Took some steel wool and tore it up in to pieces and laid it on the tin in various places, then sprayed more toilet bowl cleaner on them to get the dark spots. After about 15 minutes of soaking, spray it off with water and let it dry in the sun.

If you look at the picture above of our kitchen island, that’s how it will look. The wood over the tin is from our old corn crib that I tore down. The sliding door to the pantry are the flooring planks from the upper corn crib between the 2 side bunks.

When you saw cut the old wood, you can age it also to match. Take an old pickle jar and fill it with cider vinegar, then put some pulled apart steel wool in the jar with it and let it sit for a few days. Then brush it on to the cut ends and it will grey them up to match in several minutes.

If you want old farm stuff to hang on the walls, 75% of what you see in our house came from an Amish store, Yoders Lamp Shop, in Arthur Illinois. Some of the other stuff was from our farm, other things were from local auctions and Antique shops. The old Case tractor nose grill hanging over the fireplace was from an Antique store in Indianapolis. The windmill sail blades and tail section from a tornado damaged one from Gifford, Il a few miles from our house.
