EC Illinois | I’m on the search for a tractor to run my 64 row air seeder. I’ve looked at case 9x70 tractors, blue versatile 9682s, and deere 8960 and 8970s. I basically am aiming for something with a Cummins. I found a decent looking 8970 with decent tires and 8k hours. I’m told the 70 series has some nice upgrades over the 60 series. My question is this, since I really only need about 310 hp and 30+ gpm flow, is it a waste to entering entertain the idea of a tractor with 100 extra hp? I’m gunning for longevity here. Is there a fuel economy hit or buff to running an overpowered tractor?
I’ve been advised by the hive mind here on ag talk to steer clear of the blue tractors I mentioned, not because they’re poor quality, but due to parts and reman trans availability. The red Steigers aren’t exactly any cheaper then the deeres and my red service manager said they don’t have enough surplus hyd flow to be doing the job reliably anyways. The green service around here is the best of all the options so I just want to know if going with an overpowered green tractor is a bad idea. Would it make sense to turn it down from 400 to say 330 hp? Thanks for the input. | |
