Nw Iowa | Only you can answer the question, my Crystal ball is getting kind of foggy. My biggest concern is the government being involved in climate and what gov debt does to our future. ( Not a debate on climate, just fact that ball may move a lot further than we think) I used to be part owners of some JD stores and involved in a new shop build. I guess I have looked at a lot of things different since than. Complexity of new equipment is changing a lot of things. Computer upgrades for techs and tech training were mind boggling. Amount of room that a tech had to do so many dollars of work a year is tiny compared to what a farmer thinks he needs. A lot depends upon how mechanical gifted you are. Most projects for me take two to three times longer than what a experienced tech can do it in. So if I have nothing else to do that makes money than I will tackle the simpler jobs but normally can go make that money back somewhere else. That’s me. We don’t need a lot of room to do maintenance and change truck tires. Sounds like you have cattle and that is whole different game with manure spreaders, feed wagons and loaders that need to start. If you have ability and time to overhaul major equipment and need to keep livestock equipment inside than it makes a whole lot more sense. That all said I converted a pole building into a shop as my brother and I were splitting up a operation, so I gave up existing shop, that we use to do maintenance and keep our chemicals and parts and supplies. We probably avg only one or two days a week during winter as hauling grain takes most of our time but is sure nice. . Tax benefits really helped make my decision. But I did it on the cheap and still had almost 25$ a sq ft in the conversions. I state this as I Don’t want to be a hypocrite but was shocked what conversion cost me. Can’t imagine starting from scratch. I am like you , think that I can do something cheaper than what is quoted but generally costs so much at the end. | |
