Nw Iowa | I see a lot of shops busy all the time, I see a lot of shops that somebody changes oil and drink beer. Some of most talented people work out of a small space. We have a off farm business that keeps us pretty busy in the off-season and I am getting older and don’t spend off days in the shop if not needed. We maintenance power units, get planters ready to go, work on heads and combines. The reality is I don’t have to unfold a 60’ field cultivator to grease it and change shovels, I don’t need to have two combine with heads on at the same time. Planter can be partially unfolded but most work on it is done folded up. I don’t need to unfold a 120’ boom in the shop as most winter maintenance can be done folded up. My point of all this is some castles are very poor investments. Most shops no matter how well planned built 30 years ago are not up todays standards. Money is close to 8% if you are borrowing, getting close to 6 if you are not. A insulated shop is 60$ a sq ft on up, a storage building is 20$ a sq ft on up. 40$ a sq ft times 6000 is 240000$. A shop also has more overhead, insurance, heat etc. I am not against building a shop, but if you are in your 20’s, borrowing much money, I would build something I can heat with a portable heater or whatever, keep your main equipment under a roof and put the other 240000 to work for you
. I understand if you are a livestock producer that needs to start equipment in and out all winter you have additional needs. | |
