I think you inadvertently shined some light on why the TW discussion rages on here. Seems like most that say higher TW=higher yield are all up north. For you guys apparently 58 lbs is high. In this part of the world we'd call that average, 60 is about the threshold where guys around here start referring to it as high. Not unheard of to see 63-64 lbs although somewhat rare. At this latitude we're rarely, if almost never in danger of not black layering as long as it's planted somewhat timely. Even 2009, which was probably the latest year I can remember what didn't black layer was planted late and was considered a gamble even at planting. 2019 I don't think there was anything around that didn't black layer and almost all of that was planted in June. Dont remember 2009 exactly, but I know in 19 we had what we call low test weight corn here which bounced either side of 54 lbs. Once in awhile you'd find a number that was 51-52. Around here lower test weight usually comes with a late fall, so a longer grain fill which usually brings above average yields. Seems like when we have higher test weight here, probably half the time its drought conditions with smaller kernels and a quicker grain fill/dry down. I'm of the opinion the quick dry down has quite a bit to do with that.
