SE Iowa | After 53 crops this is my observation. Good crop year = good tw weight except for any variety that never ever has a good tw. Late planted crop = lower test weight every time. I'm talking early June. Drought years = heavy test weight due to small kernels = more dense like popcorn which has high tw. One year, 2014, which was a record, sticks out. Had split planter 6 rows each. One variety filled the hopper way fuller then the other but color of corn was a pale yellow and I knew just from looking it was yielding way less then the other because that ugly color tw was 52-54 lbs while the other was 60lbs. Did not need to look at the monitor to tell me this. Show me a low tw corn and that = low quality corn every time. High tw = good quality unless drought resulted in diseased product. Livestock feeders who feed corn will tell you there is more food quality in a heavy corn. | |
