southern MN | Got a new variety of corn some years ago. When it set ears they looked - odd. Very fat around, but short ears. The kernels had a shriveled look, and were not even straight rows on the cob. The kernels were not rounded, but odd triangles sort of.
Looked like a disaster really. The small regional seed company was kind of worried, as they sold a fair amount of this new breed, and frankly it looked like a disaster.....
Harvested 10% less volume from those acres. But the test weight was 63, some loads a little higher. The wagons kind of groaned, and the fella at the elevator finally asked what corn I had, as it looked a little different flowing out the wagon and they noticed the amp draw on their legs from it.
Ended up kind of a nice corn, had less volume to handle, but the bushels from the test weight were fairly close to normal.
The seed company never used that cross again; said they actually had some requests for it the next year for those feeding especially to poultry, but thry didn’t want to risk whatever was going on with those genetics a second year......
I still kid them about that corn, I ask to buy some 65 test weight seed again......
