Eastern NE KS | I sold this very deal 2 weeks ago. The cows were 9 and 10 years old and weighed 1250 and 1495. They brought $0.93 and $1.10/lb, respectively.
The steers averaged 319# and sold for $3.33/lb. The big cow raised a small calf last year but was pregnant. I figured she stopped milking mid summer. So she was done. The smaller cow was milking ok but had a late calf. I believed this salvage was better than selling late fall last year but chose not to roll the dice again on summer born calves.
Locally, cows up to 7 months PG are sold by the pound. Pairs w/250 or bigger calves are split. Cows with babies are sold as pairs but the cow must be under 6-7 with a shapely udder.
I don't think this is a forever practice. Calves and pound cows are in good demand (high prices) today. | |
