Subject: RE: Soil test for soil health

Sanilac Co. Michigan
This is such a complicated subject that I dont think anyone fully understands!

For a very long time I was in the camp of "if you remove X# of nutrients, you gotta bring in and replace it with X# of P, K, etc. Then I noticed nothing really moved much on my grid samples. Hmm. So what happens if I leave things alone and screw big broadcast applications of P&K?

Have been doing that the last few years and what do you know? Tests haven't moved! This is all long term notill in a small grains/soybean or edible bean rotation, so no corn, but pretty much all the residue goes back to the soil. Don't use much for covers, unless you count the aftermath growth of oats and wheat. I do lime and I do use a pretty heavy dose of 10-34-0+Zn in furrow on cereals, as well as N+S and sometimes micros foliar.

So maybe the organic and Natures guys are right. "There's oceans of P&K out there, you just gotta make it available"! Maybe, just maybe, notill is one of those steps in the process.
