Subject: RE: Calf with Suspected EColi Treatment?

Eastern NE KS
Please have patience with my questions :
1. Specifically, what antibiotic treatment(s)?
2. Do you know the calf nursed colostrum on time?
3. Do you have a baby calf scours problem and frequency?
4. If scours is around would you consider preventative vaccination of dams (won't help this set of calves)?

Scours caused by a virus will not respond to antibiotics. However, prophylactic treatment with antibiotics helps prevent secondary infection. E.coli is a bacterial infection and usually treatable, yet this calf did not fully recover.

In hindsight, treatment of the calf should focus on dehydration correction and prevention by IV. You are correct. Clear electrolyte fluids would have been less dehydrating than nursing mom.
