SE IL | I do not understand the constant obsession and stupidly revolving around this subject. Do you think the market would trade a 0 yield and sky high prices all summer until the crop is harvested? Of course not they would use a trend line type number derived by several private firms. The main difference is that info wouldn’t be out in the open as much. Also am I the only one that does crop budgets with production cost and yields? Am I the only one that expects good yields and also that those yields will increase over time? There is easily 50 years of data that showing increase in yields. Also the 180 number they started with is not some pie in the sky number, if everyone had good growing conditions the yield would be well over 200. If one wants to say this years 173 was everyone having an average crop I think there are a whole bunch of areas hoping this is not the new “normal” or average or however you want to look at it.
