Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa | 1970: Semi-retired Grandpa decides he isn't busy enough, rents 160 acres a mile from his house. Dad and I drive 3020 gas tractor and 227 mounted picker 15 miles to help him pick corn. I am driving 3020, finish the field, help Grandpa hook up last load to his Farmall "H" tractor with a Caswell loader (sticks out about upteen feet in front of old H). I pull out of field with tractor and corn picker, look back just in time to see Grandpa heading up the steep field drive way, full head of steam due to the full load, doesn't turn quick enough, loader hits the fence corner post and take it out, fence falls in a heap. I get back in the farmyard smiling, Dad says "whats so funny?", tell him the story, he says "don't say anything about it". Grandpa eventually shows up, ask him "How's it going?". Got the answer we expected, "Fine". end of story. |
