Mendota illinois | I must be too old. Also, I can remember starting working at a John Deere dealership in 1965 and the 227 pickers come in like a one unit. Would unload them and put them about the right with the apart. I spent all fall putting on center snouts and mounting them on 4020s or whatever, take off the fenders, move out the wheels, I did get kind of good at it but I don’t look forward to doing that anymore. The dealership would sell 8-10 every year. Will always remember trying to put a 227 an old John Deere G of course the wheels are not been moved in 20 years and they were not easy to move. It was lubed, heated, and everything else and I started used a sledge hitting on the end of the axles to try and get the wheels loose. I finally got moved, farmer went to take it home and the right hand axle start working out of the axle housing. Hitting on the axle had caused the nut on the inside the axle to split letting the axles work its way out of housing.
Those were the days of putting cabs on 4020’s, switching narrow and wide front axles, adjusting rear wheel spacing and hooking up 5 bottom plows to the tractor and delivering. That dealer usually sold about 30 or more 4020’s a year.
Oh what fun.
What “great” memories.
