And sometimes, the locals tell you to shop at WalMart
We are out in the sticks so the first WM came to a town about 100 miles away in the early 90s. I had just bought my first tracked Cat and wanted a nice tool box to keep wrenches, etc. orderly. WM had recently opened their first store there but I didn't want a WM box. I wanted something a bit better so I shopped the local auto parts stores. None of the stores had a box anywhere close to what I had in mind so I asked if they could order. I was promptly told they couldn't compete with WM and they weren't interested in getting something for me. I didn't want cheap WM stuff and would have paid more for better stuff but the stores all had a "Whipped dog" attitude and didn't even try. I ended up with a cheap WM box in the cab of the tractor. It's kinda junky but a whole lot better than what the "Quality" home town stores would sell me. 
And then, a couple years later, I was wanting a good quality shovel and went to a farm & home store. They had a bunch of the hand tools I was shopping for but I asked the attendant if they had stuff made in the USA. He looked at me like I had sprouted a third ear in the middle of my forehead. He said no one had ever made such a request and he really had no idea if they had anything of the sort.
