North of London
Think you have it tough..............
when i was a kid we had a yard to mow about 30x30 on front of the house within a cedar hedge (which we had to trim at least once a year with manual trimmers)
the grass was mowed with a push reel mower and another small patch was mowed between side door and lane and a little more behind the house where the door led to the barn with a track that was kept in check with the foot traffic.

The rest of the 'grassy' areas would be knocked down once a year with the horse drawn sickle mower and a lot of the rest of what is now lawn was small pasture paddocks to turn a horse out in or some calves and even a few sows at times.

The lawns got bigger when power mowers came on the scene. Gas powered not human power.

So why do we cut so much grass now?
They seemed to have survived in the past with much smaller lawns.
