I suppose I have seen it where early heavy growth ran out of gas......and thinner lighter stuff was able to hang on longer waiting for a rain.

That's kind of why I've been trying to dabble with fertilizer placement and planting seed away from a band of nutrients. Hoping that early growth and yield expectations aren't too high fresh out of the gate, only to be dashed by normal inadequate rainfall.
