Pulled some ears from a irrigated corn field the other day. The first 4 ears was gathered where the water didn't reach. I hand shelled them and weighed the kernels on each ear, they came in at a range from 142.3 to 174.4 grams with a average of 157 grams per ear. I mixed the kernels up and came up with 24.5 percent moisture and 54.5 lbs. test weight. One of the ears had 18 rows of kernels, the remaining 3 had 16. Using the number of kernel rows and kernels per row i came up with a average of 527 kernels / ear. Then i counted out some kernels and weighed them and came up with 1564 kernels / lb. which equates to 98635 kernels / bu corrected to 15 percent moisture. One added thing i calculated the number of kernels packed into the 1 pint test weight cup, it came out to be 1340 kernels. Now to the 3 ears i pulled from the area that got watered. The weight of the kernels from each ear ranged from 268.8 to 360.9 grams with a ave. of 319. A mixture of the kernels yielded 34.6 percent moisture and 51.5 lbs. test weight. All 3 ears had 18 rows of kernels with a ave of 600 kernels / ear. The kernel weight came in at 915 kernels / lb. which equates to 66558 kernels / bu. corrected to 15 percent moisture. The number of kernels packed into the test weight cup was 741. |
