Subject: RE: I love Ethanol BUT explain this

UP / Thumb of Michigan
I ran 4 or 5 GM flex fuel pickups with 5.3 engines. Put E85 in when available, otherwise regular. Never threw a code, never had any issues.

Had a new 2018 GM ordered, supposed to be flex fuel. Wasn't when it came in. Dealer wasn't sure why, it had been ordered that way. I left the new one there at the dealership, found a new Ford Flex fuel that would work. Did the same fuel wise- used e 85 whenever I went past a pump. Threw codes at about 50K miles. but ran just fine. Took it back to dealer, first excuse was that I used the devil alcohol. But, I said, its a flex fuel vehicle. Ford says I can run E 85. Service manager said I was doing something wrong. What, neither of had any idea. Ultimately, after speaking with the sales manager and the service manager I could only come to one conclusion: that being, I was going to continue to use E 85 just like in the past, never had issue's before, and it was painfully obvious the GM had built stuff right and Ford hadn't. I was smiling when I said all that to both of them, but they also both knew that I wasn't going to be back next time if a different resolution couldn't be found. Only reason I'd jumped ship was because they found a flex fuel vehicle and the GM dealer didn't.

Anyway, not sure what happened really. Service manager was mumbling something, they reset the codes (or whatever it is they do) and I never had another issue afterwards. In fact, bought another Flex fuel Ford this time. No problems so far.

Also, it took a few months to figure out why GM and Dodge had abruptly stopped shipping flex fuel vehicles. The big 3 had been getting a pass on some CARB fuel economy averages due to E 85 use, apparantly. That all of the sudden quit supposedly- they had to meet the standards. Only way to do so was eliminate flex fuel options on vehicles. Or, so I was told.
