I had the bearing go out on the right side behind the feederhouse chain drive sprocket and it kept operating unnoticed by me until the shaft was worn and snapped off.
The left side has the low speed bearing that’s the same as the right side supporting the upper feederhouse chain driveshaft and also there’s the high speed bearings that support the variable speed feederhouse drive belt sheave that has the hydraulic cylinder in it. That one will catch fire!
I heard that one changing tune but wasn’t sure where it was. Then I smelled smoke! There was charred dust inside the pulley assembly when I took it apart.
It’s not too bad of a job to replace bearings and seals if your hydraulic cylinder/stub shaft isn’t damaged. I think the old style is NLA from Deere. Not sure how much it takes to sub to the newer one. If I remember correctly old style has a 5/8 bolt holding the brace on the outside and new style has a 3/4” bolt there instead.
