No that is not normal and no do not go to top of pivot unless you want to be out of water like we are..

60 inch drops bubbling straight down with 15-20 lbs at pivot is more effective and more efficient by far than loosing half your water to evaporation..

You also could be running pivot to fast..

I was blown away when I went to Nebraska and seen all the pivots with no drops.. that is no more efficient than row irrigation..

NRCS gives money away to lower drops and go from 120 down to 60 inch spacing


We have significantly higher humidity here than you do, especially in July. And we aren't so beastly hot week after week.

I have both pivots and row irrigation. I assure you, pivots with overhead rotators are far more efficient.

Also, we're not trying to supply the majority of the water for the crop. We are supplemental irrigation, because that's all that's needed. It's not uncommon to apply less than 6 inches of irrigation water, and get 250 bpa corn. (not this year, obviously)
