Oregon | I agree with justdave, in my experience they tend to growl first. But its easy to diagnose- pull the front cover and check it for heat.
Impossible to say from here, but after you have eliminated so many things, I'm inclined to think buildup on the inside of the intake beater. A lot of those in the 70-series out here were converted to solid drums do to buildup in grass seed.
