NW IA | We plant 15" straight and combine at an angle, We are doing this for a couple of reasons:
1. No shutoffs on the planter, so trying to minimize the overlap during planting
2. We strip till after soybeans, and when we combine straight, the rows centered on the combine where the chaff and trash are heavier can tend to bother with plugging. We have found by combining on the angle and strip tilling straight, we go in and out of the high residue areas and have virtually eliminated our plugging issues. That said, we upgraded strip till bars for this fall, so perhaps we would not have that trouble going forward even if we were straight with the combine.
Dad is harvesting his 47th crop, and he loves doing 15" on the angle. He feels it helps prevent pushing when it gets tough. 640FD with hydraflex. Whichever way it is planted/harvested will provide the same effect. 3 degrees is plenty to make it work nice for us. Another thing we like is by planting straight all the time, we aren't bouncing across previous years rows, which helps keep row units quieter during planting.
FWIW, any of the above suggested methods are totally viable, and each fits their system. This is what we landed on to make our system work the best. Good luck. | |
