There is zero shortage of mother nature's own cover crops that will grow with the same condusive weather a cover would need. Why does no one ever talk about the nutrient, moisture removal (sometimes a good thing) or soil health benefits of weeds? Cover crops are simply planned weeds.
One weed comes to mind that might work in a corn-soybean rotation. I say this with no disrespect to winter wheat growers who have to cope with this terrible grass weed. I am talking cheat grass, in our experience it is there growing in the spring and up and growing as we speak before the main crop is off. |
