
| hinfarm - 9/27/2023 07:55 I hear this often. There is time for fall tillage but no window to plant covers, odd since they require the same conditions.
Its not uncommon to be doing fall tillage in the snow or as the ground is starting to freeze. Cover crops seeded past Oct 1st don't usually amount to much around here. Past 3 years most of it has laid in dry soil until spring without germinating.
If the govt money for covers disappeared I believe most of the cover crops in this area would disappear as well. Some of it appears to be done for no other reason than govt money. It works well for the cattle guys that harvest early, other than that it doesn't look like the benefits much outweigh the costs (without govt paying most of the bill).
