So, is it your contention that no mining or oil refining is needed for bio-fuel production?
Of course oil refining is required for vegetable oils. The glycerin must be separated from the methyl esters. This can be 100% done without any fossil fuel. There are multiple refineries now that use part of the biodiesel to power the refinery. There is a biodiesel refinery about 5 miles from one of our farms in Deforest, WI. They use a distillation tower for their veggie oil to finish it. It is some of the best in the country.
The city of Madison, WI has been using b100 for a couple years now in their heavy diesel equipment (plow trucks, dump trucks, wood chippers, etc.). The feedstock comes from area farmers.
If one wants to say there are still outside inputs, then that is true. The same is true of electricity or petroleum. Even horses used to eat 1/4 to 1/3 of the farmland to “fuel” them. | |
