They come from sun activity and can happen anytime of year.

Best I remember seeing was in late July when I returned from dumping a load of wheat
They were so intense you could hear them.
Got kids out of bed to have a look.

Sun has been active lately but in our case it has been cloudy and we have not been able to see them but lots of pictures being posted from other areas.

I should add that we are far enough south we only see them when they are really big and bright
