Southeast WI | So you know we've been using covers for a relatively long time here. I mean I was using them in front of my pumpkin crop in the late 80's to early 90's to keep weeds down early and then I'd moldboard plow under for field prep. One of those early years we had little spring rain and I was amazed at the hard plowing and zero soil moisture. The crop emergence was delayed but we did get rains that year and it was ok. However that was a big caution flag to me!
Fast forward 20+ years later and now we've had some zealots traversing the country saying how we need to leave covers grow along with our cash crop "because good things happen". Well you'd think some of these folks would have yield data to back up their claims - but guess what? Nope, none, but they keep spreading the just believe gospel. I know at least one stated we don't worry about yield. Well ok, but that DOES pay the bills here I know. So this is the basis for developing a data set and one that can be reliable to give recommendations off of on how to use covers. | |
