East of Broken Bow | +2. The tracks where the pivot stops will be shallow. I cut a wiper pivot for hay with the tracks, and the first 2 don't even have a rut, and is shallow for the 3rd pass. I go 4 times around, and for the last pass, if the rut seems deep, I will pull the swather 'in' right at the rut, and then swing it 'out' as soon as it goes past (I have a swing tongue).
Alternatively, you could fill the ruts to just slightly shy of level with rock or gravel, right along the end, far enough to make however many passes you use for your ends. It won't cost that much, and it won't take that long if you only fill in like 50 feet from the end.
If your ground is level, using floatation tracks like RAAFT tracks will prevent deep rutting. In fact, if you have them on before you plant, and let the hay establish itself, before watering, I have seen where alfalfa grows right down the pivot tracks. It's stunted, but often isn't killed unless you have to make a lot of passes. | |
