cropsey, il 61731 | They wear out, Ed, like everything else. No tarot cards necessary. The current track record of green companies that operate on government grants isn't good and I don't expect it to get any better.
Palm springs had a whole valley full of windmills sitting idle in the late 80's because there was no money to maintain them. Of course, now most are operational and they have expanded as gov't money flowed. Pretty good reason to be cynical.
You are still free to enjoy your tesla. Basically Tesla decided to make a car with current battery technology and motor technology (which as improved a lot). Even with the weight disadvantage, it's fast and has a reasonable range. Still batteries have a finite number of charging/discharging cycles. They will get cheaper, but the kids mining the minerals in Africa have to get paid. There just isn't a free lunch when it comes to batteries. Of course if you get the batteries burning, you'll have a lot of energy given off for a really long time. Unfortunately such external combustion is hard to use. But you already know this.
I've said before there will be a market for EV's in cities with relatively short commutes with little need to test the range. If that's the case, the battery might last a super long time or at least long enough for replacements to be cheaper.
