We plant wheat with a JD750 into heavy stalk residue following a couple tillage passes. Every year we think there is a lot of trash but still get a good wheat stand.
I think what you are planning will work just be careful to not get the seed too deep. Probably should up your rate a little also. Or find someone who will loan you a no-till drill for an afternoon.
