That won't work where he is located, the beans aren't even off yet and this cake needs to be spread yet, average killing frost date is probably Oct 8th there. Those oats would be lucky to get 6" tall and since they have almost no lignin in them at that stage they would be gone over the winter and he'd have the bare ground he's trying to avoid.

If it was a small grain crop that off by August 1st, then it would be a different story.


Maybe...during the PIK years here we'd use barley cover planted around Sept1 and it would be close to headed out before the frost killed it...Here is close to Fargo Nd
