| Yes the auger is powered by an electric motor. Usually the auger shaft extends past the burning head and has an arm attached to it that rotates and catches teeth on the ring that surrounds the burning head to make it rotate as well. The auger either has an elbow under the burning head that only the shaft extends through and the coal is forced to change directions and exits upwards onto the burning head or there is a section of reverse flighting to force the coal straight up a pipe onto the burning head. The one I built used the latter design. Sometimes the same motor that runs the auger also powers the fan but often the fan is powered by a separate motor.
For a central yard boiler the water jacket had an aqua stat in it and the stoker would turn on when the water/antifreeze mixture for below a certain temp and would shut off above a certain temp. When shut off the coal would just smoulder until it turned on again. It would smoulder for several hours in warmer weather. The heating mixture would circulate continuously to all the buildings and back in very well insulated underground pipes. Each building would have its own thermostat and use the heat in whatever heating system the building had. | |
