While this may be an interesting thought, don't think it will hold water in the long run.
If you were the employee, how would you feel about this?
What if another employer offered better pay, better options. etc.?
fwiw... my off farm employment has allowed me to provide more for my family than I could ever extract from the farm alone.....
and yes, benefits make a difference. Try buying health insurance on the open market for a family of 5 or 6. unless you have independent wealth, this becomes a major reason so many individuals and spouses work off farm.
from your example, everyone would just write a check.... not as easy or realistic as you may think.
YMMV

I didn't go back and read above, but I think the reference is that if big business wasn't providing health care for everyone, those of us that don't get big business benefits would likely be able to write a check for either insurance or actual health care. If we all had to do that and doctors and hospitals had to be competitive in price, things would look a whole lot different than they do now and working families would have more freedom to navigate life as they see fit instead of being indentured servants to gain health care.
With the current system, we not only have to pay for our healthcare or insurance, we have to pay for all of the insurance bloat and healthcare paper shuffler bloat, and the corruption that is in that and also the big drug company bloat and corruption. |
