Subject: Double crop corn behind wheat

Western OK
We had a crappy wheat crop due to drought, that was only made worse by wet weather during harvest. Thin wheat makes for an excellent weed crop, especially when it takes almost a month to get it out.

We had a couple of places that were going to be layer out for cotton next spring. So with a full soil profile, and rumors of El neno setting in We decided to try some late double crop corn.

Planted at 14k on June 30th. Got an excellent stand, but the rains quit. Then the 100+ degree days with lows in the mid 80s along with the oklahoma winds.

I didn't think it would pollinate, and I figured it would just burn up and die. But for the most part it stayed green and held on except for the really sorry red spots, or low ph dirt. Finally got a nice and slow 2in rain about a week ago. I pulled a few ears and to my surprise it pollinated pretty good. I'm not educated enough on corn, but I'd say it was milky, just starting to dent when these pictures were taken about a week ago

The first 2 pictures are ears I pulled that looked pretty average across the better farm. The last one is off a compacted spot on the pretty sorry red farm that I planted. The plant in that compacted spot is maybe 5ft tall. I guess I'm going to have to put a wedge kit on my corn head to try to scoop them up.
