Wisconsin | I don't claim to know that level of detail in soils! 9/10 years we will have a full soil profile in the spring and be waiting to dry enough for planting. They could have planted in March and early April here, not far from Mikado, maybe there was one bit of rain that muddied things up?
As far as climate, a little bit makes a big difference and that influences the soil also. I see these pics from W IA, SE SD, NE nebraska and they look like 24" of perfect black loam that could grow great corn with very little rain as long as the soil was wet all the way down in the spring. Here it's USUALLY assumed that the soil is full every spring, but the soil could be 100' of sand in the central sands, or nice loams but sloping and thin, or heavy clay that doesn't hold that much available water even if it never dries out. But we usually get a lot more rain than W IA, which is why we have more weathered soil. | |
