| When test weight gets into the lower 50’s, there is in general some other quality factors that coincide. Lower starch/energy content, less nutrients transferred from the plant to the kernels etc. however low test weight corn has a tendency to be higher protein and fiber content.
Since most corn is grown for the energy component, when the energy isn’t there because of low tw, it is less valuable.
In general, tw high enough to not receive a discount had a growing season that was favorable enough that the energy content/bu is acceptable. | |
