We do not reduce herbicides per say, however the rye, even when killed before planting at 6" tall has some herbicidal properties later in the season. This pic below is from Nick's SARE plot with Jim Stute early July '22, note the grasses on right and not much on left. Where the grasses are this was straight notill, no rye, and the cleaner side was early killed rye. On a whole field level this would have allowed him to spray 7-10 days later if he needed to wait for other weeds or if weather delayed him.

In corn I personally use these herbicidal properties by spraying a lower rate of Verdict (7-8 oz) with Gly burndown and it adds to the length of the Verdict " activity". I noticed the lack of weeds when using just Gly/24D burndown but have since switched to using the Sharpen component in place of 24D since moving to Enlist on the bean side. We can't use Sharpen in front of beans on our lighter soils.
