Southwest Illinois | We started using fungicide on bean with test strips and eventually went to leaving untreated test strips. It's hard to out guess when it will pay and when it won't. In the 5 or so years we did test strips we would sometimes only see a few bu advantage but also saw instances of double digit yield advantage. We spray everything now, fungicide and insecticide. We raise seed and our premiums have been better as well. Yes they are harder to cut, but if speed is your ultimate goal, then don't spray. Our experience is that year over year it easily pays for itself. Corn is a little different animal. I think in corn variety plays a role as does planting date. We don't see the big advantages on the early to mid April planted corn, but it can be huge on later planted corn from mid-May and later. In corn standability is a pretty big benefit as well. | |
