ND
I'm in same boat. Work full-time and farm about 1000 acres plus 150 head of cattle. Started the same way. Find good used older tractor and hoe drill along with some good used tillage equipment. Hire spraying done because the wind and weather are unpredictable with day job. Hire combining done until you get enough cash to buy good used older machine. Let the current renter continue to farm 500 and hire him to do your custom work until you can take it all over. Should develop a good relationship with them and they will be happy to phase out and be available if you change your mind down the road. Eventually try to cut down full-time job to 4 days a week and keep full-time benefits.
