Southeast WI
Here we had the soil profile full from fall 2022 and winter - did the western part of the state not get that done? By the end of March rains shut off - this is where adaptive mgt comes in. We killed covers early on everything but the wettest ground that had water standing in spots well into April/early May. So rye grew on those fields.

2012 was a diff animal. You can see from my data that there was a signif hit on yield. Covers were killed out in early Nov of 2011 (got big growth after wheat and since then no wheat) and we never got the soil profile recharged before the 2012 crop was planted, plus the heat came on early and was intense. 2023 is NOT comparable to 2012 in that dept. I'd have to look back at rainfall records but even then we didn't have establishment issues from dry soil at planting like 1988 and 2023 was. Lots of crop sat in dry, tilled soils for weeks both of those years.
