Nw Iowa | I would be in camp of majority, start slow, keep your day job, learn the art of growing crops first. I agree about talking to family first to see if everyone board for a 4 or 5 year plan. Than find a mentor wether it be the current renter or another area farmer to work with first year or just work for a local famer for a year. This is assuming you have limited experience and need it. Would really stay away from any machinery purchase for at least a year. Than you will see what relationships you develop and what you may need to buy, also think machinery will continue to soften unless crop prices really turn around , so time is on your side there. Most people want to know what machinery they should buy when starting farming, I really think it should be last step. Even you lose money for first year or two you will learn quickly and set yourself up for success rather than failure. | |
