NE IL | From a midwesterners point of view that looks like a good set of crops that don’t all have to be harvested and planted at the same time. Don’t see why you couldn’t at least seed everything yourself. Pull type sprayers are cheap enough I would try to do that yourself as well. If you can find reliable custom harvesters I’d hire that as long as you can. Finding a custom harvester is tough where I’m at but owning a combine and support equipment has little to no ROI vs custom harvest rates. Above all keep an eye on your long term goals. If farming is what you want to do, in your situation I’d jump in with as many acres as the family would rent and the bank would extend credit towards. If you’re unsure work for the existing tenant for a couple years and see if it’s the lifestyle you want. | |
