NW Wisconsin | I started 2 years ago but with a hell of a lot less scale lol. About 150 acres I was farming a little bit before but that was with beef cows and Alfalfa. Everyones going to tell you get this get that ect but this is what has worked for me.
1. Hire out the planting and combining, there is no way that you will be able to go from 0-1000 acres in one year. You will not be able to afford a corn planter that has the gadgets and tools needed to get the job done. Around here planting runs 20-25$ an acre.
2. If you till thats probably the cheapest equipment you can buy and do yourself that is something you dont need the latest and greatest. If you no till then your SINGLE BIGGEST ROI will be getting your own sprayer... Dont need the fanciest or even a self propelled sprayer to do a good job.
3. Ask neighbors for help there is bound to be someone to help you either with field work or even advice. I had many neighbors that were willing to donate time and equipment. Figure out what crop can have the best ROI and have a rotation. I plant continuous corn and alfalfa because corn is very yield predictable in my area and nets me the most consistently highest ROI
4. FINANCE THE CHEAP THINGS. I was dead set on running and paying everthing with cash.... yeah you will run out of money real quick. Find the things that have cheap interest. Depending on where you are at there should be decent offers on things like seed and chem. Fertilizer is usually the thing that runs at prime rate or above... Spend your cash on the things that will cost you 10% interest finance the things that you can finance for 5% and still get cash discounts | |
