Too late. Corn will shade out plants before they get established.
Honestly it's a crappy way to try and establish covers. Can't use adequate weed control methods and I've never seen it work well. If you do get it to stay alive till harvest here you harvest corn, bury the covers in residue and then they die. I don't think it can be a reliable way to use covers at least in a grain corn system.
Results are hit and miss here a little farther south.
At this point I'm only using it as a means of reducing weed seed production in less than ideal organic corn stands. Some cover crop competing with the late flush of weeds after last cultivation reduces their intensity. |
