NE Iowa | My father in-law raised lots of hogs so every acre was corn every year. 40 years of continuous corn that was chiseled and disced every year. Some cornstalks were baled for bedding but they were hauled back to same spot with manure. He bought as much corn as he raised for feed so lots of manure. I rented the farm a couple years and took some soil tests. The p and k were higher then I thought was possible. The organic matter was nothing special, low 2's. This ground was Sandier then what I am used to farming in the hills. My eroded hillsides are 3-4 percent organic matter with corn bean and no-till. Soil type matters more than crop rotation when it comes to organic matter. | |
