SC Wisconsin | I get all my calves from newborn so I know what they are fed from the get go. I don't have the facilities to seperate them and feed accordingly, so they are all fed like holsteins shelled corn and pellets from 9 weeks old to finish. I can get holsteins to all grade choice with a few primes in 14 months. Crosses maybe take 30 days off that. I track all tag numbers and you would think the crosses in a group would go prime since they have that finish look earlier than the holsteins but the kill sheets have a higher percentage of holsteins go prime at 14 months than crosses. That's one of the reasons I'm backing off buying crosses for this turn of calves, between that and purchase price I would rather feed a holstein. For freezer beef it's a little different story though | |
