Subject: RE: Training a bull.

Never had a bull growing up and milking cows later, got the first on when we went to beef, was intimidating. First one when you hauled a round bale in would always butt it and rub on it, one day he was doing it by the rock pile when I went to close the gate so I heaved a pumpkin sized rock at him and hit him just over the eye. after that he followed the cows around like a meek little puppy and was well behaved never bothered the bale again. Neighbor says when you are out there always walk thru them in other words make him move every time, even if you have to go a bit out of your way to do it, when they quit moving sell them. The AL baseball bat is a good idea even if you never use it, it gives you confidence that they can sense. My daughter checked some cattle with a bull a few years ago and ran from the bull, said he chased her, I think he was curious not mean, but I sold him, didn't really like him so made it a real easy decision I think he sensed her apprehension or fear, was curious, she got scared ran to the fence and he followed, if she had hollered at him and advanced a few feet I think he would have backed down, I wasn't there though and she was so he went bye-bye! Some cold winter day we should start a thread on calving ease and calf size .
